Americans throw away almost as much food as they eat. Huge amounts of food rot in the fields, disappearing into feeding troughs animals or be directly transported to the landfills.

The food is thrown away because it is not perfect. On the fields the food is being left behind because harvesting costs too much money. The rest of the food is being thrown away by supermarkets, restaurants and home refrigerators.

Traders and consumers sent this way each year eat about sixty million tones to the trash. This has converted in a lost value of 160 billion dollars.

According to farmers in California they sometimes thrown away a quarter of the crop before it goes to a trader. “I would say, about 25 percent of the harvest in good times, is thrown away or given to the cattle”
